Now is the time to upgrade to PHP 8.3 or 8.4 with your hosting provider. Noting that WordPress offers beta support for PHP 8.4.
WP Engine skipped PHP 8.3 and currently lets their customers choose between versions 8.2 and 8.4. I favor using 8.4, but if any incompatibilities are found then version 8.3 is also performing solidly. Kinsta hasn’t updated their PHP Benchmarks beyond 8.3, but does show that 8.3 performs the best.
Previous PHP versions 8.1 and 8.2 are currently on security-only support, with the former dropping support in just a few months time at year’s end 2025. View the support lifecycle chart for details.
PHP 8.4 was released back on 11/21/2024 and has had nearly a year’s worth of patches made to it already. I’ve found it to be quite stable and reliable with my WooCommerce clients.
